This 8.5-hour program is designed to make employees aware of the potential risks involved with digging below ground (or disturbing) soil, gravel, etc. Unmarked infrastructure can pose serious danger, and students learn the necessary steps to minimize risk. The course follows through the pre-planning stage to the actual dig, and highlights both mandatory and recommended practices.

Participants are taught what defines a ground disturbance, when and why common hits occur, the reason for maintaining a code of practice, and about different types of potential exposure. They also learn how to clarify sources when searching for underground facilities, how to provide notification to the facility owner, and how to receive owner notification. Other topics include: making an emergency response plan, distances involved when searching for an underground facility, minimum sources for searching for an underground facility, and know how to use permits and pre-job meetings to their fullest advantage.

Objectives tested by written competency exam. Certification, valid for three years, is issued upon completion of objectives.
